Automatism — Drawing The Unseen

Automatism — Drawing The Unseen

Place a blank page before you.

Choose your medium.

Pencil.

Charcoal.

Ink.

Whatever calls to you.

Hold your question.

Then draw.

Do not decide beforehand what you will create.

Allow the hand to move.

Lines become shapes.

Shapes become forms.

Forms may become symbols.

When you feel finished, stop.

Do not immediately interpret.

Look at the entire drawing.

Then ask:

  • What did I notice first?
  • What emotion does it evoke?
  • Is anything repeated?
  • Does anything resemble a person, animal, object, sigil, landscape, or symbol?
  • Does anything connect with my question?

Write your interpretation separately from the original drawing.

The page should preserve what came through before the analytical mind began explaining it.
