The spirit board is a lettered oracle.
Approach it with the same care you would bring to any other form of spirit communication.
Decide beforehand:
- Who am I attempting to contact?
- Why am I contacting them?
- What am I asking?
Place your fingers lightly upon the planchette.
Begin with simple questions.
"Are you willing to communicate?"
"Do you wish to continue?"
"Would you like to answer my questions?"
If letters begin to form words, record them exactly.
Do not correct spelling.
Do not turn fragments into elaborate messages before the session is finished.
Ask for clarification where necessary.
And do not assume that movement automatically proves the presence of an external spirit.
Scientific research has demonstrated that unconscious or ideomotor movement can contribute to the movement of Ouija planchettes and pendulums.
Within a spiritual practice, you may nevertheless choose to interpret the experience as communication. The important thing is to retain awareness of the distinction between experience, interpretation, and proof.
When the work is finished, close it deliberately.
Thank the spirit or presence with whom you attempted to communicate.
State that the session is ended.
Put the board away.
Return fully to ordinary awareness.
